Artist's Statement

My artistic career began at the Maryland Institute College of Art where I studied interior design and fine arts.  I began oil painting of still life in the classical manner and exhibiting in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.

Over the past fifteen years my work has focused on collage, shadow boxes, assemblages, and encaustic.  All call upon a spirit of spontaneity, play, and surprise.

Currently my work is sculpture/construction made of Dade

county pine, vintage wood and metal objects, painted lineoleum tile, paper and ceramics.  It is a major shift from my past work in collage and encaustic.

Learning to use a variety of tools like the band saw, drill press, table saw, and belt sander allows me to cut and shape the wood pieces of each construction.  A majority of my work is four sided and made to be viewed in the round.  My process begins with choosing the colors of wood.  The first side a pattern is created by integrating various shapes, sizes, and color of the pine.  Moving around I arrange a different configuration with each side.  Lastly I add vintage wood and metal pieces to enhance specific areas.  I am often surprised to recognize the similarities between creating a collage and my current path in construction.
